NAIOP SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER

3RD QUARTER NEWSLETTER

Historically July is vacation month for NAIOP events but the Developing Leaders group went against the grain (again) and held a social at the Blue Martini in downtown Miami.  Too good of a time was had by too many as the “networking” continued on until the wee hours of Miami time.  Our first major activity this quarter was the CPN Conference/Trade Show on August 15th.  The attendance was overwhelming with 440 attendees and 72 exhibitors showcasing their projects and businesses.  One creative booth got away from the typical golf putting contest opting for a dart throwing contest with the targets being pictures of the major bank CEOs.  First prize was a deed to a condo in downtown Miami.  Second prize was two deeds. Also in August was a member’s only social in downtown Ft. Lauderdale at Riley McDermott’s and a great time was had by all.

In September we enjoyed a great breakfast meeting hosted by Liberty Property Trust at their new office building in Boca Raton.  A distinguished panel of institutional investors gave us a recap of their current appetites for property and what their plans are in this challenging economic environment.  October 20-23rd is the NAIOP National Annual Meeting in Las Vegas where we will send our South Florida contingency out to represent us.  Andy Petry, George Pincus, John Geisen and Pam Knox sit on either the National Board or National Forums and will be keeping South Florida’s best interest in mind.

The Gemstone sponsorship program will be kicking off its 2009 program shortly. In 2008 we had 25 sponsors and a survey conducted showed their level of satisfaction “very high.”  Diana Parker is the new chair for this successful program celebrating its 3rd anniversary.  Gemstone sponsorships include prominent visibility at all NAIOP functions, memberships, meeting admissions, bus tour representation and much, much more! Call Diana at 305-533-2871 for information and applications to have your Company be part of this valuable program.

Don’t forget November 20th is the annual Broward Bus Tour.  Sponsorships are still available but going fast as this is a very popular and well attended event.  Mark your calendars for November 12th for a very exciting program titled “How to Weather the Storm” with a panel of the tri-counties most experienced Developers and brokers.  Notices to be sent out next week. Also, in early November, a PAC fundraiser-networking social is being planned!

Note your calendar for our final event of the year – members only Holiday Luncheon on December 10th at the Tower Club.

Some ideas floating around for future meetings include a motivational speaker/ psychologist whose topic will be “Discovering Why You Ever Got Into Real Estate In The First Place” with round table topics as “should we legalize drugs now”, “will my life insurance still be good if I jump off a building”, “is moving in with your parents at age 54 a bad thing” and many more career enhancing activities.  In a separate room we could have a sign painter available for the developers on the street corners advertising: “Will Develop For Food God Bless”.  Just an idea.

Lastly, after 20 years with our organization, John Parr is retiring at the end of this year as our Executive Director.  John has done an outstanding job for us over the years and they don’t come as dedicated and loyal anywhere.  Please let John know when you see him between now and the end of the year how much you appreciate his hard work for us.

Sincerely,
Mystery Writer
